One of the companion events HELEXPO is organising for this year’s 32nd  PHILOXENIA International Tourism Fair and ΗΟΤΕLIA Hotel Equipment Fair, to be held 18-20 November 2016, is the third annual “Tourism Destinations” congress, which once again will host some very interesting speakers from Greece and abroad.

With the theme of  “{Re}Branding Destinationς: Image making”, the congress will focus on the means and methods that need to be used so that a tourism destination can develop in tune with today’s new imperatives.

The identity of a tourism destination is a much more complex and demanding proposition now than it was in the past. Increased competition on the global market coupled with the speed of communications via the internet has created new and far more specialised services. A tourism destination is no longer just a matter of relaxation and entertainment – it also has an investment aspect

The four units of this year’s congress therefore propose to answer the following basic questions:

  • Should a city, a region, a place, change its brand image to become more competitive?
  • What are the strategic procedures that need to be followed if this change is to be successful?
  • Does internet tourism marketing in our country follow international communications standards?
  • What successful examples of cities or regions in Greece or elsewhere could serve as models?

In addition to the panels (which will also answer other interesting questions),  and once the congress has completed its work, there will be an innovative afternoon “Youth Brainstorming” session, which is expected to produce interesting proposals for rebranding Greek tourism destinations, and these will be included in the results of the congress .

The Congress is jointly organised by the Ministry of Economy, Development and Tourism and the Hellenic Tourism Organisation (ΕΟΤ), with the participation of many important local entities, including the Central Macedonian Region, the Municipality of Thessaloniki, the Organisation for Tourism Promotion and the Thessaloniki Convention Bureau.

The Congress is open to:

  • Representatives of agencies and organisations
  • Representatives of travel bureaus and hotel operations
  • Advertising agencies and marketing and promotion firms
  • Faculty and instructors from universities, technological educational institutions and private tourism schools
  • Entrepreneurs in the tourism market
  • Journalists in related fields
  • Students in tourism programmes

The Congress programme is being enriched and will soon be posted on HELEXPO’s website www.helexpo.gr on the PHILOXENIA page, with information about the speakers and their topics.
